Report: Adam Gase texted Peyton Manning about availability after injury to Ryan Tannehill

The Times-Picayune website reported that the father of recently retired future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning said Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase texted the former quarterback on Dec. 11 — the day Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill had his season-ending knee injury — ostensibly to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement for the stretch run.

According to Manning’s father, Archie: “He said, ‘Hey 18, Tannehill went down.’ He said, ‘I think he’s going to miss some time. The first question I’m going to get at the press conference in the morning is if I’m going to try to bring you to Miami. What do you want me to tell them?’

The text message came back from Peyton, ‘You tell them I could probably come play, but there’s no way I can miss carpool the next two weeks.’ So, he was done.”

The Dolphins ended up starting Matt Moore for the team’s final three regular-season games and its playoff contest in Pittsburgh, a 30-15 loss to the Steelers.
